Recreational Paddling, Section 1

Learn the fundamentals of outrigger canoe paddling with Wally Wong. Students will receive a basic orientation to proper paddling form and technique, complete safety assessments, learn the importance of teamwork, and build strength, stamina and rhythm. Proper care and handling of paddles and canoes are also integral parts of this class. Participants will be lifting and carrying canoes in and out of the water, and completing basic maintenance and care as part of the class. Please be prepared to share, encourage and support each other in this fun learning experience. All levels of paddlers are welcome.

Note that class is dependent on water and weather conditions. Last minute cancellations or delays may occur. Makeup classes are scheduled as able. Required equipment is provided. Comfortable, water-appropriate clothing and footwear (water shoes), sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, towel, and drinking water are recommended. There is an outdoor shower and restroom on site.

Meet your Instructor

Our canoe culture is ever expanding. Wally’s passion for paddling started at an early age with the Waikiki Surf Club. He has paddled competitively ever since with Hui Nalu, Kawaihae and Hui Wa’a o Waiakea. He has enjoyed canoe surfing, sailing and crossing the various channels of the Hawaiian islands. He has sailed on Hokule’a, Hawaiiloa and Hikianalia as a crew member on different voyages since 1992. He will be sharing all aspects of our Hawaiian Canoe culture to prepare you for your journey.
